My journey began over a decade ago, sitting across the table from small business owners who were overwhelmed, burnt out, and trying to “figure out HR” while also trying to run a business, grow a team, and keep the doors open. I quickly realised something: no one teaches business owners how to lead people. They’re thrown into hiring, feedback, compliance, conflict, performance issues — all the things that keep a team healthy — without any roadmap.

Over the years, I’ve worked with more than a thousand small to medium-sized businesses and some of Australia’s biggest organisations, including Westpac, CBA, and Domino’s ANZ, where I led HR for a workforce of 23,000 staff and 400 franchise partners. And no matter the size of the business, one truth remained:

Teams flourish when leadership is intentional.

And clarity, culture, and compliance are the foundation of every high-performing workplace.

People Department was born from that conviction.

I saw good people running great businesses — but struggling with HR because they didn’t have the support, confidence, or clarity they needed. I wanted to change that. Not by giving them generic templates or rigid, black-and-white advice, but by becoming a strategic partner who understands both the law and the realities of running a business.
